Iran’s ‘No Date, No Signature’ joins Oscar contenders at Asian festival

The Fourth Annual Asian World Film Festival which is slated for October 24 to November 1 is to showcase 14 Oscar and 7 Golden Globes submissions in the program.

Jalilvand’s film will compete with ‘Sobibor’ (Russia), ‘Cake’ (Pakistan), ‘Buffalo Boys’ (Singapore), ‘Namme’ (Georgia), ‘Ghost Hunting’ (Palestine), ‘The Signal Rock’ (the Philippines), ‘The Journey’ (Iraq), ‘Operation Red Sea’ (Hong Kong), ‘Village Rockstars’ (India), and ‘Panchayat’ (Nepal).

Out-of-competition titles are Cannes entry ‘Burning’ (South Korea), ‘No Bed of Roses’ (Bangladesh) and ‘The Great Buddha’ (Taiwan).

‘No Date, No Signature’ narrates the story of a forensic pathologist Kaveh Nariman, a principled and virtuous man, who gets involved in an accident and faces a dilemma of whether he is responsible for the death of a child or if the cause of death is unrelated to his doing.

Among the movie’s international awards are: Best Director and Best Actor Award for Navid Mohammadzadeh at the Venice Horizons sections of the 74th Venice Film Festival; Best Film Award at the Brussels International Film Festival; Best Director at Russia’s Mirror International Film Festival; Audience Award and Best Actor Award at the 18th Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival in Spain; and Grand Prize of 2017 Chicago International Film Festival.

The competition will be judged by a panel of jury led by actress-producer Vivian Wu.

On the AWFF docket are 2018 Golden Globe submissions ‘Love Sonia’ (India), ‘The Lord Eagle’ (Russia), ‘Butterflies’ (Turkey), ‘The River’ (Kazakhstan), ‘Night Accident’ (Kyrgyzstan), ‘Million Loves in Me’ (Malaysia/Hong Kong) and ‘The Road Not Taken’ (China).

The AWFF brings a broad selection of Asian cinema — over 50 countries from Turkey, Japan and Russia to India and the Middle East — to Los Angeles to showcase the region’s filmmakers and strengthen ties between Asia’s film industry and Hollywood.

Also on the international competition panel of jury are Silvia Bizio, artistic and co-director of the Taormina Film Festival (Italy); (‘Twilight’ Saga star Justin Chon (USA); KTLA anchor Kimberly Cheng (USA); Alex Dong, CEO of Sun Entertainment Culture Ltd., (Hong Kong); producer Eleanora Granata Jenkinson (USA), Sam Lahoud, Founder/Chairman of Beirut Film Society (Lebanon); and ‘Under Heaven’ writer-director Dalmira Tilepbergen (Kyrgyzstan).
