Iran to host EU’s Film Weeks, screening 20 movies

EUNIC is the European Union National Institute for Culture. As the European Union does not have an embassy in Iran, holding European Film Weeks in the country is organized by EUNIC Iran.

The event will kick off in Iran on July 8, Rieger told IRNA’s cultural correspondent on Thursday, adding that some 20 movies will be screened in eight different Iranian cities.

Rieger, also the Austrian deputy head of mission in Iran, said that holding European Film Weeks officially began in 2017.

In the first edition, movies from 12 EU countries were selected which were screened in Tehran and Tabriz. In 2018 movies from 15 countries were screened in six Iranian cities while in this year’s edition, 20 movies from 20 different countries – including 18 EU member countries as well as Norway and Switzerland – are to be screened in eight different Iranian cities, Rieger said.

He said that the figures show a 20% increase both in the participating countries and in the cities in which the movies are screened.

All the selected movies are award-winning movies in different international festivals or have been nominated for prizes at the Academy Awards, he said.
