Iran releases 36,000 prisoners after Leader's pardon

36,000 prisoners were released and 24,000 prisoners' sentences were commuted due to the Leader's order, Director General of Iran's Prisons Organization Asghar Jahangir said on Tuesday.

He noted that 1,796 women were also pardoned or their sentences were commuted after the Leader's order.

539 foreign prisoners were also among those released while the prison terms of 265 foreign prisoners were commuted, the official added.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on February 7, 2019 pardoned or commuted prison terms of a large number of convicts.

The pardon was granted at the request of the country’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani on occasion of the 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution.

Article 110 of the Islamic Republic Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the judiciary.
