Iran praises EC, UN-SPIDER for monitoring flood-hit areas

“Special Thanks to the @EU_Commission and @UN_SPIDER for having Constructive cooperation w/ us to monitoring Flood Zones of Iran by their Satellites,” Jahromi wrote in his Twitter account on Thursday.

He added “I'm looking forward to continuing these efforts. Obviously, Upcoming Iranian Satellites will help them too.”

UN-SPIDER ('United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response') is a platform which facilitates the use of space-based technologies for disaster management and emergency response.

Unprecedented heavy rains caused floods in various parts of Iran over past two weeks. Scores of people were killed and 478 others were injured while a large number of people were displaced across Iran.

The disaster coincided with the high season of Iranians' trips as they were spending the national two-week holidays of Nowruz.

Several regional countries, such as Russia and Kuwait as well as a few European states have sent in in-kind assistance to be received by the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in the flood-hit regions.

Some 70 people have been killed as a result of the deadly floods that have left hundreds of thousands homeless.

Earlier, Jahromi said that new satellite, called Dusti (Friendship in Persian), is ready to be launched into the space.

'Soon we will have good news for the people because Dusti satellite is ready and we are waiting for the final say of the Defense Ministry to put it into the Earth's orbit,' he noted.

Three dimensional attitude control, on-board data handling (OBDH), semi-active heat control systems and solar panels made in Iran are a number of the technologies used in the new space vehicle.

Dusti is a micro-class 52-kilogram satellite and will fly in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the minister said.

The previous Iranian-built spacecraft, called Payam (Message in Persian) failed to remain in the orbit although it was launched successfully.
