In his message which was released on Thursday, Masjedi condoled with Iraqi government and people and sympathized with bereaved families of the victims of the sad incident.

The ferry is reported to have sunk near Mosul. It claimed the lives of 71 passengers.

The ferry has had the capacity of 30 people but 170 passengers were on board at the time of incident.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi has urged immediate investigations over the Tigris incident.

The passengers were on the way to an island in Tigris for their holiday.
