In an interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Monday, Mojtaba Khalidi said 17 of the victims were from the southern Hormuzgan Province, six from the North Khorasan Province in north eastern Iran, five from the central Alborz Province, two from Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province in the south-west of the country and two others from Fars Province in southwest Iran.
He said 167 of the people who were poisoned have been treated and discharged, but 173 of them are still hospitalized.
Hormozgan police have arrested three people, including a couple, on charges of making and selling the alcoholic beverage.
Drinking alcohol is banned in Iran and punishable by floggings and cash fines.
Yet, some Iranians drink homemade alcoholic beverages which are available at a low price.
