ICRC working with countries on landmines: Official

The ICRC is active in awareness raising and education on landmines and unexploded ordnance of wars in many countries, including Iran, Cambodia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syrian and Yemen, the committee's deputy representative in Iran Marc Ackerman said on Thursday evening after visiting a similar program underway in Oshnaviyeh border region, western Iran.

Referring to cooperation of ICRC with Iran on educational and rehabilitation programs, he said, 'Despite the cooperation, there has been no request on Iran's part to ICRC on the negative effects of landmines explosion and unexploded ordnance on the victims.'

The ICRC's Iranian partner, the Red Crescent, however, has implemented helpful programs on education in the affected regions, Ackerman said appreciating the efforts.

Deputy head of Red Crescent's rescue and rehabilitation department in West Azarbaijan Province, Reza Mossafer, told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that an instruction on awareness raising on landmines and unexploded ordnance in war-stricken countries has been drawn up by the ICRC, and is being implemented with cooperation of Iran's Red Crescent.

Iraq's former regime of Saddam Hussein in the eight-year war on Iran planted some 16 million landmines in various parts of the country that have claimed the lives of many innocent civilians.
