Diplomat: Iran wants an independent Iraq

He made the remarks in an Iftar (fast breaking) ceremony held by Emir of al-Hemmeyri Tribe Wednesday evening.

Hosseinian said the relationship between the two countries, especially with Iraqi tribes, is so close and amicable, which should be expanded in different fields.

He said that Iran has stood by Iraq during war, crisis and hard time and will stand by the Iraqi people and government during reconstruction era.

In the Iftar reception, a number of tribal chiefs of the region were also present.

Sheikh Hemmeyri and some of the participants delivered speeches and appreciated Iran's historical role in supporting the Iraqi people.

The sheikh also gifted an antique shot gun, dating back to 1920, to the Iranian consul general.
