Assyrian national day held in Tehran

'The Assyrians have presented ever-lasting services throughout the history, which have symbolized human science, culture and art,' said Assyrian Member of Parliament Yonathan Betkolia in the ceremony.

Naming some of the services, Betkolia said, 'Translating philosophy and logic from Greek into Arabic and then into Persian and medical achievements are among those services.'

July 1 was selected as Assyrian national day during the 27th international union of Assyrians in Erbil, Iraq in December 2010.

Karen Khanlari, another Christian member of Iranian parliament, said in the ceremony that one of most ancient civilizations belong to Assyrians.

Ambassadors of some countries, including Russia, Lebanon, Australia, Turkey, and Georgia took part in the ceremony.

Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Arameans are ethnic groups, whose roots go back to Mesopotamia, mostly live in northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, northwestern Syria and northwestern Iran. They are Christian and speak Assyrian Language, a member of Semitic Languages.
