Archeologists after protect columns of Nehbandan Fire Temple

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT), quoted Mohammad Farjami the head of the archaeology team as saying on Saturday that the fire temple enclosure is located in a village of the same name, 75 km northwest of Nehbandan and east of the Shah Kouh Mountains.

The village is in the environs of Mighan rural district, the central part of the city of Nehbandan in South Khorasan.

The fire temple enclosure with a span of close to 35 hectares, covers the side of the village, he said.

The archeologist added that the site consists of the foundations of the pillar of the building that is known by the local people as the building of a fire temple as well as a castle hill the major part of its architectural structures has been destroyed and a small part of its ruins is remaining.

From physiographical point of view, in the southern part of the hill, a path with a width of nearly 25 meters passes in the east-west direction, and its surrounding area is mostly agricultural lands in the south and in the east and the texture of rural houses in the west and the north, he reiterated.

Farjami further remarked that parts of the remains of the castle and the foundation of the pillars of the building in the area are hidden under the residential houses of the village, which has been greatly destroyed due to the housing construction as well as several cases of flood in the village.

He noted with regard to the stone foundations of the pillars, the gypsum mortar, the pottery and the surface findings collected from the surrounding of the enclosure, the site dates back to the late Sassanid era and early Islamic period.

He noted that in addition, the adobe structures available in the highest part of the castle, belong to the late Islamic period (Ilkhanid to Safavid).

Farjami went on to say that the monument was registered in the list of National Heritage in 2009 under the number 28126.

He referred to the drilling of 30 boreholes in the surrounding area, displacement and setting back of the walls of residential units where the columns were inside the same walls, clearing the wastes and ruins from the foundations of the columns made of stone and gypsum mortar. And installation of panels indicating the privacy of the enclosure as the most important activity conducted in the plan for determining the limits and proposing the privacy of the site.
