Brigadier General Ayyoub Soleimani told reporters on Chazzabeh border terminal on Sunday that 61 percent of pilgrims crossed Mehran border, 23 percent Shalamcheh border, 13 percent Chazzabeh border and three percent traveled to Iraq by air.

The number of Arbaeen pilgrims declined by eight percent compared to the figure for the year earlier, he said.

Of the total number of the pilgrims, 150,000 are foreign nationals, he said, noting that in the run-up to Arbaeen, the number of pilgrims planning to enter Iraq via Iran is increasing.

Soleimani further noted that currently, 30,000 police forces are offering services for the pilgrims and they will do so until all pilgrims return home.

Iraq hosts over two million Iranians every year for Arbaeen, a major Shia event marking the end of 40 mourning days after Ashura marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and his 72 family members and companions at the hands of the brutal ruler Yazid in 680.

Each year, Shias flock to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in Karbala in Iraq to participate in the mourning ceremonies.
