Parts of Koohnak Castle discovered in eastern Iran

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT), quoted head of the fifth archeological exploration season Mohammad Farjami as saying on Wednesday that the architectural structures date back to the Seljuk up to the Ilkhan periods and their dominant materials include strata, bulk stone, adobe, mud and plaster mortar.

In the present season of explorations a carved brick with the hybrid body of lion and human dating back to the Seljuk era, different objects such as stone and enamel beads, bronze objects, timbers of the roof, architectural spaces, several clay pots belonging to the sixth and seventh centuries, etc. have been discovered.

Farjami went on to say that in the explorations conducted so far in the trench, architectural structures dating back to the third and fourth centuries and the Middle Islamic era as well as clay works belonging to the same period have been discovered.
