Bulgaria celebrates 139th anniv of liberation from Ottoman Rule

According to a report by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), national flag of Bulgaria was raised at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Sofia during a ceremony held in the presence of President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Rumen Radev.

The President reviewed the guard and laid a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier.

Attending the event were also Vice President Iliyana Iotova, caretaker Defence Minister Stefan Yanev, other ministers, top brass, Patriarch Neophyte, Chief Mufti Mustafa Hadji, diplomats and citizens.

Many heads of state cabled greetings to President Radev on the occasion including Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, the United States President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, the presidents of the State of Palestine, Pakistan, King Philippe of Belgium, and Pope Francis, President Radev's press secretariat said.

The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 led to liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule after nearly five centuries.
