Certain countries worried about weakening of terrorists in Syria: SNSC Secretary

Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Russian President's Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs Alexander Lavrentiev.

Touching upon certain countries’ worries about Iran-Russia-Turkey trilateral initiatives on Syria, Shamkhani hailed Tehran-Moscow positive cooperation for holding the Astana meeting on Syria.

He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to settle the Syrian crisis via political means.

He said that political settlement of Syrian crisis could not be achieved as long as the terrorists of Daesh and al-Nusra Front are present in Syria and are sponsored by some regional countries.

Praising Iran’s role in settling Syria crisis, Lavrentiev, for his part, described Astana meeting as a remarkable achievement for continuation of political initiatives endorsed by Iran, Russia and Syria.

He added that the Russia-Iran-Turkey field cooperation would continue to tackle terrorism, underscoring that the political negotiations would not hamper the combat against the armed terrorists.
