For sure, this is a dark day in history, Lewis added.

He made the remarks in the opening ceremony of a joint photo exhibition of Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) with the UN in the venue of Iranian Artists Forum in Tehran on Sunday.

Lewis congratulated Reporter's Day in Iran, adding that the occasion was registered in calendar in year 1998 when IRNA reporter lost his life for the sake of free flow of information.

Mahmoud Saremi with eight Iranian diplomats were killed by Taliban terrorists in Mazare Sharif, Afghanistan on Aug 8, 1998.

Lewis said he recalled the incident very well, because at that time he was working at the UN office in Afghanistan.

An exhibition of photos and historical documents was held here jointly by the UN Information Center in Tehran and IRNA on Aug 7, 2016.

In the opening ceremony, Deputy Foreign Minister for legal and international affairs Abbas Araqchi, Managing Director of IRNA Mohammad Khoddadi, Head of the UN Information Center Maria Dotsenko, and a group of foreign ambassadors and political representatives in Tehran were present.

The exhibition will be open to public from August 8 to 13, 2016.
