According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 21:47 hours local time at the depth of 10 km underground.
The epicenter of the quake was located at 46.61 degrees longitude and 34.12 degrees latitude.
No report on the possible casualties or damages to properties has so far been released.
A crisis management committee was set up immediately and rescue teams were dispatched to the quake-stricken area.
Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
