
The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted Rahim Valayati, head of the archeology team, as saying that archeological exploration in the castle of the ancient city of Owjan is underway with an aim of determining the limits and privacy of the historical city.
He said Owjan was one of the cities of Azarbaijan during the Seljuk and Ilkhan period which played a significant role in the social, political and economic life of that time as such that Ghazan Khan, the Mongol king, built establishments in the city and called it Dar al-Islam.
Velayati, a professor at the University of Tehran, added that in the current project, the archeology team, in an effort to release parts of the architecture of ancient city of Owjan embarked on the exploration of the castle and in the first season of exploration the eastern tower of the castle was fully discovered during the excavations of expert archeologists.
He noted that the main target of the archeology team in this season is the pathology of the historical monuments of the city of Owjan, as well as the study and elucidation of tourism capabilities in that area.
He stated that in the second season of exploration in the western tower, discovery will be performed for the stone wall around the castle in the surrounding hills.
According to the archeologist, the expanded historical site of Owjan is located in the south of the present city of Bostanabad and in the west of the village of Ashrafabad and on the eastern coast of the Owjan Chai River and in the center of Chaman Owjan was has been ruined in the wake of various events, including earthquake and different wars and at present little works have been left from the significant city.
