'The nuclear deal is not between Iran and the US, it is not even between Iran and the so-called 5+1, nowadays 4+1. It is in fact a deal that belongs to the entire international community, because it is endorsed by the [United Nations] Security Council, and actually integrated into the Security Council Resolution 223,' Abbas Araqchi told TRT's One to One on Thursday evening.
He was making a reference to the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that was signed by the world major powers in 2015. The US withdrew unilaterally from the deal in May.
'The Resolution has made the JCPOA as one of its annexes, so it is an integral part of the Resolution,' the Iranian diplomat said.
'In this sense, it belongs to the whole international community and therefore it brings commitment and obligation for all members to support the nuclear deal and try to implement or facilitate the implementation of it in good faith and in a constructive atmosphere'.
When the US withdrew from the deal it actually violated the Security Council's Resolution, he reiterated.
Commenting on the anti-Iran attempts by the US officials and their Zionist allies at the UN General Assembly, Araqchi said 'There is lots of rhetoric and we are used to those kinds of rhetoric, it's not something new.'
It is now nearly forty years after the (1970) Revolution and American presidents have always made the same mistake trying to speak to the Iranians with the language of threat which has never worked and would not work in the future, the Iranian foreign ministry official told the Turkish TV channel.
'We have proved that we will answer only to the language of respect,' he said.
The Iranian diplomat also noted that President Trump went to the same Security Council for condemning Iran for abiding by the resolution.
'We are working very closely with other countries, especially with other participants to the JCPOA,' he said.
The three European signatories to the deal—France, UK, Germany—have vowed to cover the loss imposed on Iran by the US withdrawal. They have also said that the work for establishing a special financial channel to enable European companies to keep doing business with Iran.
'I think all parties accept the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US are not legal,' Araqchi said.
Answering a question on probability of a war against Iran, he said, 'We have to be prepared for the worst case scenario, but I do not think that the US is that much naïve to wage a war against Iran, because they know, better than anyone else, our capabilities to defend ourselves and to retaliate.'
