Rudroneel Ghosh, who is an assistant for the Edit Page in the prestigious Indian English-language daily, the 'Times of India', made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in the Indian capital.
He said the US President Donald Trump has devalued the US credentials in the world by unilaterally pulling out of the Iranian nuclear deal so the international community has to gang up against Washington’s open bullying.
The veteran journalist believed that “by unilaterally pulling out of the Iranian nuclear deal (JCPOA), US President Donald Trump has not only devalued Washington’s credentials in the international community, but has also openly bullied the nations across the world, making it a must for the world community to stand up against his bullying.”
Terming the US withdrawal from the JCPOA as 'illegal and unfortunate,' the seasoned analyst of the world affairs said, “The re-imposition of the sanctions on Iran by the US after President Donald Trump’s abrupt decision is truly illegal and unfortunate, as the Iranian nuclear deal was the only non-proliferation agreement working well, with Tehran complying with all the stipulations demanded in it.'
'The deal had drastically reduced Iran's uranium stockpile and scaled back its enrichment program. This has been repeatedly confirmed by UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Therefore, the US pulling out of the Iranian nuclear deal has no justification whatsoever,” he added.
Justifying Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s rejection of President Trump’s offer for negotiating, the senior journalist said, “For any negotiation, the US had to return to the deal. The US is totally isolated on re-imposing the sanctions on Iran and America’s close allies Britain, France and Germany have clarified that they are determined to protect the European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran.”
“It is quite clear that the US is openly trying to bully other countries into towing its line, despite the fact that Iran has done its best to address America’s concerns about its nuclear program. Now, it is to see that if the international community accepts such a naked bullying? If it does, what kind of a template it will create for international relations in future? Through its recent moves on Iran, the US has already torn into pieces the sanctity of a number of international accords. We are looking at a very and very dangerous precedent here.”
Terming US President Trump as 'a puppet, playing into hands of the Zionist and the Saudi Arabia regimes', Rudroneel Ghosh stressed confidence that 'Trump is playing into the hands of Saudi Arabia and Israel.
'This is a reflection of Trump’s administration's corporate, political and strategic interests vis-a-vis these two countries. Note the $ 110 billion arms purchase deal signed between Saudi Arabia and the US last year and Trump's connection with Israel via his son-in-law Jared Kushner. Plus, Trump's core Christian evangelical vote base in America supports Israel. So obviously Trump will go with the Saudis' and Israelis' interpretation of the Iran nuclear deal.”
“No doubt, Trump’s decision to re-impose sanctions on Iran is not driven by his desire to protect American interests or, as he claims, preserve the world order. His only motivation is just to undo Barack Obama’s legacy, as the Iran nuclear deal was one of Obama’s biggest achievements. Trump hardly cares about the merits or demerits of the Iranian nuclear deal. He just wants to show that he is a better president than Obama, no matter what the costs may be. In doing so, he is lowering America’s prestige and strategic heft and, also, making the world a more dangerous place to live in,” he noted.
Terming the US as isolated in the world community over re-imposing sanctions on Iran, he said, “The US is threatening to target Iran’s oil exports. But things are different today from what they were before 2015. Britain, France, Germany, EU, China and Russia are all backing the Iranian nuclear deal. And buyers of Iranian oil like China, India and Turkey appear to be determined in continuing their oil imports from Iran. It’s time for the international community collectively stand up to American bullying and force Washington to return to a rules-based international system.”
