Quakes shake western, southern Iran

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 5:29 hours local time (0:59 GMT) in an area located at 14 km of Tazeh Abad, 27 km of Javanrud and 36 km of Kuzaran and at the depth of 7 km underground.

Earlier, a strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Tazeh Abad at 14:37 hours local time (10:07 GMT) Sunday, injuring 287 people. 951 residential units were damaged and power supply to 15 villages were cut off.

Another earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Ruydar in southern province Hormuzgan on Monday.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 1:29 hours local time (08:59 GMT) in an area located at 50 km of Ruydar, 57 km of Kukherd , 50 km of Bastak and at the depth of 19 km underground.

The managing director of Hormuzgan crisis management center Alireza Safa Isni told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that the quake had no casualties or property damage.

Earlier two consecutive mild and moderate earthquakes jolted southern Iran on Sunday morning.

Ruydar is 130 kilometers to west of Bandar-Abbas, provincial capital of Hormozgan.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
