Trump lacks legal authority on war in Syria: US senator

President Trump 'has no legal authority' to deepen the US military engagement in Syria, Senator Bernie Sanders said in a statement on Wednesday.

'President Trump has no legal authority for broadening the war in Syria,' he added.

'It is Congress, not the president, who determines whether our country goes to war, and Congress must not abdicate that responsibility.'

'If President Trump believes that expanding the war in Syria will bring stability to the region and protect American interests, he should come to the Congress with his ideas,' the statement read.

Trump has threatened Russia that it should be ready for the missiles that Washington will fire at Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus. He has blamed the alleged strike on Syria.
