Turkey monitoring US sanctions against Iran closely

The statement, issued following a US delegation’s visit to Ankara, added that Iran is considered an important country neighboring Turkey in terms of economy, trade and meeting its energy needs.

Contacts and talks with the American sides are still in place to prevent losses following the imposition of sanctions against Iran by the US, it said.

The statement also described US withdrawal from the JCPOA and re-imposition of sanctions against Iran as very significant for Turkey.

US delegation headed by the Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea discussed sanctions against Iran in Ankara.

Turkey, which imports a more than half of its oil supplies from neighboring Iran, had earlier suggested that it did not intend to cut off trade with Iran, saying it was not obliged to abide by 'unilateral' US decisions.

US withdrawal from the JCPOA has worried neighboring Turkey, as the Turkish government has announced that it will never align with the US in possible sanctions.
