EU official: US Congress intends to stick to Iran deal

“I got clear indications that the intention is to keep the United States' compliant with the agreement,” Reuters quoted Federica Mogherini on Tuesday.

Iran and the world major powers signed the nuclear agreement in 2015. Under the agreement Iran accepted to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for the sanctions relief.

In an anti-Iran speech on October 13, Trump announced his decision to not certify Iran's commitment to the deal, despite eight reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Iran has been fully implementing it.

The move by Trump prompted criticism by the signatories to the deal. Besides, the US experts have warned Trump administration of the consequences of the decision. The unilateral withdrawal of the US from a multilaterally-negotiated deal would risk international pacts' credibility, as well as that of the US.

“I made clear any outcome of any process... has to be, at the end of the day, compliant with the deal,” Mogherini said, expressing her readiness to help lawmakers “find solutions that are compatible” with US compliance under the agreement.

'The European Union is completely united in supporting the deal and its full implementation; both at the level of foreign ministers and Heads of State and Government, we used very clear expressions and words,' she said in the briefing session, according to EU External Action website.

'And again, we wish to see the United States continuing its implementation of the deal in the future and we are ready to work with them in this regard,' Mogherini said.
