British foreign secretary: London wants to keep nuclear deal 'live'

Speaking at the foreign affair select committee in the British Parliament, Boris Johnson said: British diplomacy has helped to maintain the 2015 nuclear deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The JCPOA is still live” and the UK will try to “keep it live,” Johnson said.

It has been very important for the UK to get a clear understanding of how the relationship between US and the rest of the world is going to work and to make sure that the incoming president shares the priorities that we think are necessary.

He went on to say that the US president Donald Trump is concerned about Iranian behavior in the region, and wants to take action and constrain Iran.

“But we don’t want to have situation in which those extra measures start to shade on JCPOA and make it unviable from Iranian point of View. We want to keep the JCPOA alive,” Johnson said.

He added that London urges the British companies to trade with Iran.

Iran has 80 million people, “many of them are young, the country has extraordinary potential, they need and deserve to feel the benefits of the JCPOA.”
Head of British foreign policy apparatus stressed that “the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has found that Iran is in compliance with the JCPOA and has not broken the term of the JCPOA” therefore he added, he wanted to see more UK commercial engagement with Iran.
