Iran fire fighting operations in Iraqi part of Hoor al-Azim

Referring to the fact that the Iraqi part of Hoor al-Azim lagoon is still burning, Ahmad-Reza Lahijanzadeh Director General of the Department of Environment in southwest Iranian Province of Khuzestan said that following coordination with the officials of Iraqi city of Al Amarah, the fire fighting operation began on Friday.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Lahijanzadeh said the Iraqi part prone to the fire covers an area of 150,000 hectares, more than 16,000 hectares of which have been burning over the past two weeks.

The blaze has formed a thick layer of smoke over some regions in the Province of Khuzestan, causing various problems for the habitants of the affected towns and villages.

The lagoon has been an origin of sand and dust storms since being dried due to the low level of rivers' water.
